Becoming A Podcaster One Day At A Time

It’s been almost a year since I have written in this blog, but that is changing now.  I got a little sidetracked with my work on my main blog, and it has paid off – so I can gladly say that it was a good thing.  But I originally started this blog to review products and that is what I am going to do.

I am doing a breakthrough challenge for the next 45 days.  I am going to take the time between now and the end of the year to go through the course called: Smart Podcasting Skills (affiliate link) to learn how to podcast the right way.  I wanted to start a podcast this year, and I even had it in my goals for the year – but it didn’t happen.  So now I am working on creating the future I want to see for next year.  One of my goals for next year is to produce 52 podcasts.  That is one per week.  I am going to start the course and record interviews and podcasts in December but publish them in January.  So I am getting a little bit of a head start.

Let me begin by telling you about why I am going to go through the course.  I bought the course: Smart Podcasting Skills in April this year and I have not made any progress – like many of the things I have purchased and not used.  I don’t know Kelly McCausey personally – but I do listen to her podcast and I have purchased quite a few of her products.  I purchased Smart Blogging Skills as well (another one of her products) and I have not implemented it either.  But I am much better now as far as purchasing things I don’t plan to use immediately.  And this was sitting on the “virtual” shelf, and I already had a desire so here I am.  Has that ever happened to you?  Have you ever just wanted to do something then got distracted by something else?  (Bright shiny objects)

Now, I am going to review this product at the same time I am doing the challenge.  And I want to be fair to you readers – so I won’t be giving it all the fairy and fake stuff that a lot of reviews have.  Friends patting friends on the back.  Nope, I am going to implement and then tell you how it went.  If you decide to purchase – come along with me.  Let me know.  I just want to get a podcast out there.

Looking at the sales page – Kelly promises that I can use tools that even my Gramma can use.  Interesting.  I work with a lot of older people in my other blogs, and that can be a challenge.  As a matter of fact, I am concerned a little with finding an audience in my technology challenged customers.  But I am going to give this a good 52 weeks to see.  I will discuss later who I consider to be the target audience, but suffice it to say I think it’s going to work.

Kelly also promised to give me a good plan for press releases and editing my work.  I sure hope she gives me a good tutorial on editing my work because I cannot afford a VA right now to edit the media file.  Plus – I really want to learn to do it then I can let it go.  Kelly’s sales page is short and ends with her guarantee.  I’m obviously past that since I bought it a while ago, but I am confident this will work out.

Let me tell you why I want to podcast.  I want to podcast because I want to become a speaker.  I want to speak out and teach people how to be their own advocates.  To talk to their doctors without feeling intimidated.  So this will get me used to speaking.  And it helps my audience get closer to me by hearing my voice.  Everyone who talks about podcasting says it is great.  I know that I need to make it past 10 episodes to get into a groove, so I hope I will be forgiven my initial episodes someday when I am famous.

Now, onto the implementation I have done so far.  I listened to the first 2 audios and I made some decisions that she instructs me to do.  She had a checklist that kind of is an overview of the steps that you can check off as you go along.  So, I am checking off the first thing on the checklist.  I also listened to her interview with Connie Ragen Green talking about 5 ways to implement podcasting in your business.  Those were good.

Based on lesson #2, I made baseline decisions related to what she says is foundational to your podcast.  Let me just say that it’s clear that Kelly loves to produce audio, I can only hope to become as comfortable behind the microphone.  I also did some brainstorming and wrote down my thoughts on the other topics that she suggested we consider.  I must admit, at first I thought this lesson was a bit of a “fluff” but at the end – I realized the importance of taking these steps now instead of later.

She gives some tips for new podcasters, and an additional tip I will give you is that you are going to be nervous and hate the sound of your voice.  That’s why I don’t like the thought of editing – I have to listen to my own voice over and over.  But how many times do you listen to other people’s voices and think – how awful?  Never!  We are our own worst critics.

So with those steps over – I am ready to listen to audio #3, and see what the next lesson from Smart Podcasting Skills holds.

Here we are at another superb day – evaluating “Guide To Cashing In On Shiny New Object Syndrome“, bu Tiffany Dow.  If you want to buy it and go right along with the review, that is fine.

For Day 2, I am looking into the content of the ebook again, and I am reading the chapter about how to choose what to review and why.  She talks about how she chooses the items she reviews – good tips and as you might think – my idea is to evaluate something that I need or could use or have just purchased.  After all, it’s fresh in my mind why I chose the product  and I was hot and heavy to get it ordered, so I could do it.  [Feel free to email me suggestions of things you would like me to review].

She offers several different scenarios that would be a reason to review a product, and I think they are all very valid reasons to evaluate a product.  She mentions that you don’t have to love every product.  Well, if you buy on the warrior forum, and read the reviews, you know that all the reviews are rosy and every product is wonderful.  I want you to know that I commit to an honest review and I am going to tell you when things annoy me or I think something could enhance the product.  Finally, she talks about how we all have to build our business on some level of hope, and your customers think that way too, right?  You hope something works.

She describes several situations where product owners got mad about her review and how she handled that, and how she has gained respect for marketers based on their response to her not so pretty review.

Then she goes into the steps of a review – and I won’t give you the steps but let me tell you that when you are working on building trust with your audience, she is recommending the things that will help you build a great deal of trust.  And being honest and learning as you go.  She talks about how to evaluate the steps of the process and what you should be doing  as you are working on the product to keep up.

You have to explain what your readers are going to go through.  I love to know whether or not I will see an upsell – I personally don’t mind them – unless you have to have them in order to make the product work.  You should have put it in the product then!  And she talks about ways to keep your audience going and learning.  How to keep them engaged in your blog and reviews.  I completely agree with the first way that she discusses and you will see me doing that on this blog.

More steps, you read through them and you realize what a wonderfully thought out piece of work this is!  She covers most of the things that you need to know.  She discusses how to show your results without showing too much.  And a final chapter on how to close out your reviews.  I would personally develop criteria at the beginning – whether I made x dollars or whether I got x amount of traffic – whatever the promise is I would evaluate it against that.

So – what am I evaluating this review against?  Let me remind you of what the sales page promises –

1.  That it will help me build a loyal following.  What is a loyal following?  I am guessing that is people who come back daily and who make comments and read the posts.  Let’s give that 6 months to evaluate.  I will come back in December and let you know if I was successful.  We are at 0 readers now, so building a loyal following may be easy to evaluate.

That is all the promise that she makes in her letter.  Now that I think about it, that is probably about all she can promise.

I don’t know that she is totally realistic about building a loyal audience by just blogging.  I believe you have to market too, by building a facebook and twitter page.  By going into forums and learning more from the folks that are doing the same thing and the place where your loyal audience hangs out looking for a mentor.  I believe that will help you succeed more if you can do those things – and it will make your success happen more quickly.

Guide To Cashing In On Shiny New Object Syndrome – Review Day 1

I am starting this blog based on the product by Tiffany Dow, entitled “Guide to Cashing in on Shiny New Object Syndrome“, for my first review.

I am going to review this product as well as many others.

First, I want to start with talking about the sales page.

I bought the product from the Warrior Forum, but the link above takes you to her sales page.

I love the colors – goes well with the shiny new object syndrome name.  Yep, you see something cool and interesting and even though you are not sure you need it – you probably didn’t even realize how much you needed it until you read the sales copy – you buy it!  That’s called shiny new object syndrome.  Like, you are easily distracted.  I can admit that I am pretty much in that boat.

So, reading the website, you can see that she tells you what you are getting.  And she describes me so well – frothing at the mouth for the next greatest thing.  That’s me.

I really want to diversify my income, and develop an audience that I can be myself with.  I want to improve, Tiffany – show me how!

I have a bunch of WSO’s (shiny new objects) on my hard drive right now, man – if I could use this (like I am doing) to implement the programs I buy – I might actually make some money on line without a lot of effort.

She says it takes guts to implement her system.  I have been on Tiffany Dow’s mailing list for about a year, and I feel like I know her.  I even bought the next product that I am going to review through her link because I trust her.  So – I have a really good idea of what I am getting myself into when I get this product.

I have seen her reviews before, they are brutally honest.  And so, I know I can do this because I love implementing things – but I am a terrible finisher.  So, help me finish!

She promises no upsells (additional products that come up after you buy the product that either complete or complement the product) and she is honest – you just get the 40 page PDF file and you are ready to roll.

I won’t be asking for my money back.  I am already in love with the guide she has written.


Onto the product:

I bought it the first day it was out and downloaded it.  Not hard at all, and the sales process worked smoothly.  You are taken directly to the page that you need to download from.

I read through the file, and found some errors.  Mainly that one of the promises she made was to tell me how to make a bad review (something that didn’t work as advertised) into a positive.  I didn’t find that.  I found a few other spelling errors, but I am not too picky.  So I emailed Tiffany, and she responded with a new file that she had just updated that answered my questions.  Great – it was answered in the new file.

Going through the file, it’s easy to see that this is a viable business model.  I love how she talks about the mistakes that people make first – so you know that you can forgive yourself if you have done those and move on!

She talks about why the make money online niche is so great to work in – and her reasoning makes sense.  Everyone speaks to a different audience and we can find our leaders in different types of attitudes and styles.  You are unique (me saying this, not her) and you can find the voice that you have.  IF you are already buying lots of products in this niche, then you are a perfect person to try them out and see if they work.  In other words, you are your target audience.  Don’t be ashamed – embrace it!

She goes on to help you set up a website with the right tools.  I have several WordPress and Joomla! sites, so I skim over this section.  I did look at the settings she recommended, and the only thing I would add is a tracking tool for your website.  I like to know what words people are using to find my site and where they are coming from.  I use Clicky, they have a free plan if you are just starting out and only have one website to track.  It’s real time, which is why I love it.

I agree with her thoughts on theme selection, and what posts you need to start your blog off with.  The other thing I would add to her book is that I think you should have a resources page from the start.  You use products, people are going to ask about what you use to do certain things, and it’s a one stop page for products once you believe in them and like them for people to see what you recommend.  I also disagree that an autoresponder is optional – it’s a mistake to not build your list from the beginning.  Even if you are cheap, you can get some autoresponders for free.  But if you want to send out affiliate links, you have to use aweber.

She makes some recommendations about adding advertisements to your blog, I think it’s not a good thing to start out with ads.  I am so turned off by sites with so much Google adsense, so I guess I am just predisposed to not wanting to do it.  I don’t want you to leave my blog!

Next review day I will go over the rest of the PDF and let you know my thoughts and how I plan to take action!
