My Experience Writing A Non-Fiction Book For Kindle, Part 1

I thought I would share my experience writing my first book, because I think many of us have an opportunity to do just that with the ease of self-publishing today – all it will cost is your time. Here is the link to my book page on my blog: http://www.renaldiethq.com/living-wi…my-first-book/

I went to NAMS in February this year, and I enjoyed it a great deal.  I tell you this to mention that I won a set of 3 AUTOGRAPHED books by Kristen Eckstein. I read the one about publishing your book. I thought about it a little more.

I knew I wanted to write a book for my business to create name recognition and authority. My niche is renal diets and dialysis diets for people, and as a dietitian I have some authority, but you really do have authority when you write and publish a book. It’s like magic.

My websites were hit by Google Penguin in May, and I was lost. I had been steadily growing, but now I was down to 10 visitors a day. I got mad. At myself for relying on Google too much. It was a head thump moment. Needless to say, I had to do something.

My coach suggested that I write the book. I said ok, and decided to write about chronic kidney disease. I made a mind map for the layout. I am not that good at the software, so it wasn’t pretty. But I had an idea where to start.  I used freemind, a free mindmapping software.

I don’t know that I was convinced this was a good idea, as my coach suggested that I sell the book on kindle for 99c. And you know what my thought was? I am not going to put in a ton of work (he said 50 pages!) for a 99c book! Then it started to work on my thoughts and my pride. I could not publish a substandard piece of content regardless of the price.

And my reputation was on the line. More people’s lives can be changed by my product if I get it out there for an inexpensive price. And this was marketing. So I started to write the initial pages. And I got stuck. What could I DO that would get me started again? What would you do to get unstuck?

Amazon Kindling Review – Day 15

Day 15!  I can’t believe the Kindling membership is so huge that I am on day 15 of going through the information.

Today is about K2 Promotion!  I am still waiting on my first book to come back from the editor, but I am going to be ready to promote it when I get it posted!  So far I have already set up a Facebook page, a twitter account and a blogspot blog in my pen name.  I have added a few posts to the blogspot blog and posted some info on Facebook.  I am using tweetadder to increase my following on twitter.  Now I am ready to read more.

I start off on the overview page, talking about the two factors that make it easy to succeed on kindle.  I wholeheartedly agree with his information and I have seen it work myself, so I am on board.  Next section was about promotion on Facebook, and even though it says it’s about Facebook, it’s really about promotion reality.  He talks about what you have to do to promote your books, and how it will take a little time and effort but you can do this.

Twitter promotion section up next – reading it is a very valuable way to build your audience.  I have started doing some of this with twitter, and I don’t know if it is working or not, but I know I am building.  I have to do the Facebook stuff he suggests as well.  Then he talks about the twitter breaking point and how you can reach it – easily.  I am sure it takes some work, but to be honest – much of that can be done with tweetadder.  Then he talks about the twitter community, and I can see how the things that he is recommending will need to be done to promote your book.  Although I can see what he is talking about with his comparison to liftoff.  That it will take a good deal of work to get noticed, but once you are noticed, you are golden.

Now, honestly in the twitter numbers it is getting a little repetitive and I understand his point.  He goes into some important twitter rules of etiquette.  I watched the rest of the information in the twitter section for promotion, and it is golden.  You will learn more about how to use twitter as an author in those sections than any of the WSO information you might read.  This section will keep you getting the best followers and never run out of information on how to find the best people to follow.  The only thing is, that I wish he would give some hints on what to TWEET!  Ha.

Next, I am going to work on promoting my book once it is published and trying to get it read.  I will have two books that are fiction out shortly.  I will update you on how things are working, and continue to follow the kindling membership to see what is added that is new.  Geoff also has a bonus training that I have not started yet, called Mass Marketing Control.  I will look through that and determine if I want to add it.

I am considering buying software for the publishing, but I am not sure which to buy.  I am going to get a couple more books out using the current system that I have and see where it leads me.

Let me know how you are doing with kindling!

Amazing Amazon Kindling Review – Day 14

I took a few days off from writing about the Kindling course I am taking, but I continued to write and work on other parts of the Kindle Book Publishing process.

Just to give you an update, I put up the request for an editor on Elance and finally chose one last weekend.  I created a book that was almost 37,000 words, and I can tell you that was not intentional – it was just me writing and telling the story that needed to be told.  I have turned the book over to an editor – I chose someone who was new but put forth a great proposal.  She included a sample of her writing, and it sounded very similar to mine, so I decided it was best to go with her.  It’s going to cost me about $150 for the editor, but I want it to be good.  I hope I will earn that amount from the book, at least.  [I have a personal stash that I am using to pay for the editor, not my regular business money]  Still to come, I will need to have a book cover created – and I will hire someone on Fiverr to do it.  I may hire 2 people on fiverr.com and just choose the one I like better.  I hope to have the book out in the next 2 weeks.  I will let you know later if I feel an editor is an important part of the process.

Other people have obviously released books and not used an editor, so it might be too much money to spend on a product that I am not sure about.  But I have a need to have the book look good, so forgive me and you don’t have to hire an editor.  Geoff Shaw does not recommend it.

Going back into the membership, I see that he has added a couple of things to the Tricktion section of the membership.  I read through adding facts to your story and I see how it will improve the novel.  I had never thought of it the way he describes.  And he has added another section called reverse it that is perfect for making new stories and plot lines.  Finally, he has added a video called DAM that describes how to build a plot using multiple story lines and people.  I loved it, and it reminds me of the way I have plotted out my next book that I am writing now.  It was the way that the plot book that I bought on Amazon called – Holly Lisle’s Create A Plot Clinic.

So the next sections that I am going to review are called: Marshall and Copy Success.  The first is about the Marshall software that he recommends, and he goes into great detail about how to use it.  Then copy success shows the different successful authors – I assume in an attempt to make you feel like you can make it.  I would like to see some books done by members, but maybe he will add that later.

I hope that you enjoyed this review, next up is Kindling K2 – Promotion.  I am excited about this.  I have my next book about 10,000 words written and well on it’s way to being a series.    Looking forward to the next review on Kindling.
